Dorra, a science teacher at Colton Hills Community School shares how The Big Bang Fair helps her students discover STEM careers.
What do you love about The Big Bang Fair?
For many of my students, they don’t always consider jobs in STEM for their future. While lots of them might consider going into medicine, engineering and science doesn’t occur to them as much. It’s great to come to The Big Bang Fair, as it helps them open their mind about other careers and opportunities they could consider.
It’s really useful to show them all the different options and get involved with the activities at The Fair, to inspire them to think about all the different routes they could go down.

What do your students say?
My students love coming to The Big Bang Fair – and it gets them thinking about career options they hadn’t considered before. After attending, I even had new students join my STEM club! In fact, some students who are now in year 13 still remember coming to The Big Bang Fair years later.
How does The Fair help you?
Attending The Big Bang Fair is also helpful for me – I run a STEM club at my school, and coming to The Fair lets me explore as well as my students. I get to meet new people and other teachers and learn new STEM content – it’s always changing so it helps me keep up!
In fact, attending The Big Bang Fair has inspired me to do my own event in school, with all year groups getting involved. We’ll be hosting our very own Big Bang at School event on 19 June, with workshops and activities for the whole school to enjoy. Then, we’ll attend The Big Bang Fair on the 21 June!
What keeps you coming back?
I always try to come with a different cohort of students, so that everyone gets an opportunity to go. We take about 60 students each summer, and make sure we diversify this as much as possible so everyone can be involved.
The Big Bang Fair takes place on 19 to 21 June 2024, and is open to students in year 6 to year 8 (England and Wales), P7 to S2 (Scotland) and year 7 to year 9 (Northern Ireland).
