Meet the finalists
A sustainable F1 helmet, an automated pill dispenser and an eco-friendly water filter are just some of the amazing STEM projects named as finalists in this year’s Big Bang Competition!
Almost 1,000 young people from across the UK have entered The Big Bang Competition this year, and we can’t wait to meet our winners! Just over 100 projects have now been shortlisted from hundreds of entries. Judging rounds will take place over the next few weeks to determine the next UK Young Scientist of the Year, UK Young Engineer of the Year and the UK Young Technologist of the Year, supported by Siemens.
The Big Bang Competition is the chance for young people to get creative, explore ideas and develop their STEM skills.

Will Dally, 2024 Stantec Developing Future Communities Award winner commented on his experience in The Competition, picking up the award for his environmentally conscious refugee shelter design.
He said, “Through undertaking my project, I developed my skills in structural engineering and engineering design, but I also had the opportunity to learn more about architectural and ergonomic design, logistics planning and waste management and manufacturing processes.”
Phil McShane, Associate Director of The Big Bang programme, shared his thoughts: “Once again, we’ve been blown away by the volume of entries which is up from last year, and the levels of creativity and innovation of the projects. Also, it is fantastic to see so many entries – 61% - from underrepresented state schools.
“I know our judges are extremely excited to get going on the judging – but they will have their work cut out, as it's not going to be an easy task with such impressive and high-quality entries.”
