Discover our 3 top tips to getting started below:
1. Choose your format
Pick a structure that suits your school’s schedule and goals. There’s lots of options to choose from.
- you could run a carousel day, with classes rotating through multiple STEM workshops in turn
- or you could host a STEM fair with stalls and hands-on activity stands. This is a great way to engage a large number of students at once
- want a bit of both? Get creative and try a hybrid approach! For example, you could include a mini STEM fair as one activity station in a carousel day
Think about what will work best given your student numbers and the time you have to spare.

2. Choose your space
Encourage students to think big and notice how STEM is all around them. What better way than to get out of the classroom?
- a sports hall provides a large, flexible area perfect for a carousel or fair with multiple stations
- the assembly hall/auditorium is great if you plan to have shows, guest speakers or an end of day presentation
- sometimes you can't beat a science lab or IT room. It's ideal for hands-on experiments or coding workshops (and they’re easy to timetable!)
- even outdoor spaces can be used for large-scale activities like rocket launches or engineering challenges. Don’t forget to check the weather and have a backup plan ready!

3. Set the date
Choosing a date is one of the most important early steps! The sooner you lock in your event date, the more options you’ll have.
An early confirmed date will help you book external providers and volunteers, who can be very busy!
