Do you know an eager scientist or engineer waiting to stretch their skills? Are you looking for ways to inspire your students to discover a passion for STEM?

The Big Bang Competition is a powerful way to turn your students’ curiosity into creativity, build their skills, and share their work. There are so many reasons to enter, but we’ve picked out our top 3 for you:

1. Use their passions to ignite a love of STEM

The Big Bang Competition offers young people the opportunity to create a STEM project on any topic they’re personally passionate about. Last year’s winners included projects inspired by passions as diverse as karate and trekking!

Whether they’re interested in space, health or dancing, the only limit is their imagination. By pairing their passions with STEM, students grow their skills and create something amazing. Take a look at our project gallery for a glimpse of what’s possible.

Selected shortlisted projects will be invited to attend The Big Bang Fair where they can share their project with like-minded students. Watch their confidence and their learning grow!

2. Develop their ideas to solve big problems

Do your students want to see more solutions to climate change? Or perhaps the hot topic is AI and how its transforming society? The Big Bang Competition is a great way for young people to engage with real world issues. Show your class how to turn their ideas into a tangible, real world solutions through a STEM project. This helps them engage deeply in the topic and develop their problem-solving skills – learning how they can directly make the world a better place.

Using STEM to tackle an issue they feel isn’t being addressed in the world is a great way to encourage empathy. Last year, Grace Palmer won the senior engineering award for a mobility aid designed for their young cousin.

As Grace said, ‘I explored ways to improve the lives of disabled children and their families by creating a new product that is not on the market. The product is a transfer tool to transfer children comfortably from a wheelchair to a roller coaster or bed to a desk chair. Affordability is essential in my project, aiming to highlight a significant issue: items designed for individuals with disabilities are often overpriced.’

Meet all the 2025 winners to see discover their amazing ideas to change the world.

3. See them practice working like a scientist or an engineer

The Big Bang Competition offers the opportunity to get hands on and practically engaged, just like a real STEM professional. Through trial and error, they develop practical skills as well as essential personal skills like resilience and patience. This is how a real scientist or engineer works!

They can also work towards a special award and get recognised by real STEM professionals.

The Big Bang Competition offers a fantastic opportunity for young people to win amazing prizes in recognition for their hard work. But it’s not just about the winning, every student gets feedback on their project.
